Hairy Chick
Unwanted body hair is a constant battle for women of all walks of life. Humans grow hair but for a woman it can leave you subject to ridicule if not managed. The accepted social construct is to remove unwanted hair because no one wants to be the hairy chick. Natural beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the unwanted hair can be managed by a professional. The salons around the corner aren’t in business for no reason women flock to these spas and salons to run away from the “hairy chick” inside all of them. The question is who decides what natural beauty is and is that only another social construct? The truth is even the natural beauty must take steps to achieve that status. The images shown to us are of exceptionally polished women that don’t appear to have unwanted hair at all. There is no doubt they fight they same good fight against the hairy chick, but we never get to see them at the salon.
The Eye of the Beholder
Meeting someone for the first time is crucial in many ways. There are ways to avoid seeming shallow to others but in time the physical prevails. All that the eye can register about someone before conversation is the outward appearance. The accepted social construct for women is to keep excess hair at bay, but in men it is seen as attractive. Interestingly, men are also taking a stand against hair with the emergence of the “metro sexual” man. A woman with a mustache is not always socially accepted because overtime women have grown accustom to constantly removing hair. We are all conforming in some way to an accepted social construct, whether you know it or not. The choice is really up to you and some consider it a form of self expression to abstain from shaving. There are also those that see it as a sign of natural beauty, but one thing remains the same beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
